Katya Smirnova, Associate
Like many of IEc's Associates, Katya Smirnova heard about the company from a friend and was
intrigued by the variety of consulting areas. Originally from Russia, she studied
economics and finance in St. Petersburg before earning an MA in Economics at Northeastern University.
"I wanted to do finance and economics and there aren't a lot of companies that do both. What really
keeps things interesting is that you work for two partners which each have a totally different practice," said Smirnova.

Her work includes enforcement and litigation support - essentially working with lawyers
(often from EPA or DOJ) who have sued a person or company. Smirnova analyzes their financial
records to determine how much they are able to pay. "The ability to pay cases, especially the
individuals, are like detective work," Smirnova said.
But work at IEc isn't all analyzing numbers. "It's important to know how to work with
clients," Smirnova said. "Not only managing the relationship, but also being able to
translate the fancy numbers to a point where the client can understand what it means for them."
